BEECHENHURST TRAILS Iain Hutchinson rally Jan 16th & 17th 2010

This rally was set up in early 2003/2004 season to give us a local race in the Wye Valley. Previous races had been held near by, but had fallen by the way side. The first event we held was on the forestry commision owned trails at Beechenhurst lodge near Speech House. In 2006 it became the Iain Hutchinson Rally after we lost a great friend and fellow local musher, Iain Hutchinson to Leukemia. Iain, Matt and Shawn worked hard to get the first years of Beechenhurst races off the ground for ABSA before Shawn took over the reins, putting on the race on single handed for the next few years as Matt moved to North Wales. The event is now jointly run by Shawn and Matt and sees the Beechenhurst race as a very succesful race for ABSA gaining championship status in 2007 and once again for the 2008/2009 season. The race is popular with mushers for its fast trails and great facilities. The race is held annually the week before the SHCGB’s Aviemore event, it has become a popular race for last minute team tune ups, for novice mushers to enter their first race, experienced teams and for a stop off for those teams on their way north to the Scottish race. Its also a great venue for spectators and those wanting to get into the sport to come and see what its all about! Junior and R class races also held at this rally! The trails are gravel and hard pack dirt with some grassy bits…although we did miss out on the snow by 1 day last year! A short up hill start leads to fast straights, sweeping turns and swooping trails along its 2.5 – 3,75 mile length, its been won and lost by only a few seconds over the years! the dogs love this trail! This year sees the trails run the same direction as last year…after the trial running of it reverse in 2006, For scheduals for this race please visit www.absasleddogracing.org.uk and go to the calender 2009/2010

THE WYEDEAN QUEST Stage Stop Sled Dog Race Feb 26th/27th/28th 2010

BELLS HOTEL COLEFORD

A new and exciting race for the UK! This year sees the second Wyedean Quest Stage Stop Sled Dog Race, set along the lines of the popular stage stop events in the USA and Canada. 3 days of racing on 4 different trails…2 night and 2 day stages. The event is run on a stage stop style trail rather than the usual ‘looped’ trails. It will run 2 seperated looped trails and 2 A to B trails… Its also unique in the fact there is only classes for bred rather than number of dogs being run as well as individual musher and team musher, cani cross and junior classes. Each allowing up 8 dogs to be entered with up to 6 allowed to run on any one stage. This allows mushers to decide how many dogs to run on each trail and which ones to rest. Tactics will come into play! This could see well rested 3 dog teams beating bigger teams that have run more stages per dog. Its open to anyone over 18 who has completed a UK based race in the prior seasons (junior wyedean quest available) and dogs over one year of age that have run that season.
This tear sees our first OPEN class race allwoing alaskan huskies, hound husky crosses, ABSA NPSD, non registered siberians and non pure bred sled dogs. SDE registered pure bred and SHCGB/SSHC/BSHRA welfare/registered pure bred dogs are welcome to enter as well as the usual sled dog breeds in the pure bred classes. Hey a steady mally team could beat a lot of sibe teams!
There will be a frieght breed class for malamutes, eskimo dogs, greenland dogs, and akita teams!
for the first time we will be holding a junior wyedean quest run over 2 stages over 2 days, saturday and sunday.
A masss start mens and mass start womens class for cani cross will also be held. The’ team musher’ class is for those of you with smaller teams who wish to make a team with a friend/s to encourage everyone to take part. A team entry can consist of 2 –3 mushers and up to 8 dogs, with 6 being the max number of dogs able to run any one stage plus 1 of the teams mushers, so you can run your team one day and your friend run theirs the next or borrow each others dogs to make a bigger team! The choice is yours! All mushers will need to have a handler able to drive your dog van/truck as the finish points will not be the same as the start points on both the friday night and sunday morning trails, don’t worry the drive between start and finish on these trails is much much shorter than the time it takes to mush the trails and will be sign posted!
We will have a team of handlers who will be on hand to assist anyone needing help with a team to the start line, they will be identifiable with handler vests. please make sure you ask for their help well in advance and make sure they know where your team is staked out and any dogs issues! All rigs will need lighting for the night stages to comply with our rules. All start and finish areas and parking, stake out areas will be flood lit!
The Trails! The trails will be mainly gravel with dirt and grassy surfaces, some of the trails are a perfect mix of small gravel with short grass over the top, some hills, straights, switch backs, turns and plenty of room to over take or pass on most areas of the trail. This race will be tough on the musher, apart from the 4 trails in 3 days there is the mental and stratigic challenges! The trails are great for the dogs feet and should be fast, but be warned being the forest of dean there are some hills but nothing major, it is advisable to have dog booties for the event if your dogs require them.
The Stages:stage 1: mallards pike lakes loop one approx 3.4 milesstage 2: mallards pike lakes to speech house 3.6 milesstage 3: speech house to mallards pike lakes 3.6 milesstage 4: mallards pike lakes loop two 3.4 miles
total distance approx 14 miles
The Classes:open/ pure bred team musher/ pure bred individual musher/ frieght/ junior/ canicross men/ canicross women
it is plannned that the frieght classes will go out approx one hour earlier than other classes in the AM stages and after other classes on the PM stages to help with cooler temps for the bigger heavier coated dogs
