Wyedean Mushing Issues and Manages permits on kind behalf of the Forestry Commision and Forest Enterprise
As with many forest and training areas in the country, the Forest of Dean is a permitable area, this means anyone wishing to train or exercise sled dogs or working dogs in harness for the purpose of pulling or assisting pulling and the vehicular access to do so in the forest must do so with the prior permission of the forestry commision by way of a permit.
Permits are available from Wyedean Mushing on application.
The area designated for the training of sled dogs is the Blaize Bailey woods near the villages of Littledean and Soudley and comprises of several trails and loops on a mix of hardpack gravel, dirt, grass and woodland trail. All other areas of the Dean are out of bounds
Trail permits run from 1st September to 31st August each year.
Cost: on application
heres some frequently ask questions below.
Q: How to do i get a permit?
A: Please contact us here at wyedean mushing via email or via phone, contact details are on the home page.
Q: What do i need for a permit?
A: liabilty insurence, available from either membership of the Siberian Husky Club of GB or via Mr John Coyne. You will need to prove either membership of the shcgb or an insurence certificate from John Coyne - links available on the LINKS page of this site. On issue of a permit you will be issued a key to access the training area, gates must be kept shut and locked during and after use. No open fires, fill in all holes and take dog mess hoem with you.
Q: Do i really need a permit to train?
A: Yes you do. even if you are using a dog scooter or bikejor set up! canicrossers do not require a permit. Any dog working in harness is required to have a permit to do so, this is a little known, yet enforceable law in the UK.
Training without a permit puts our sport, local races and training areas at jepody of being refused or revoked by the forestry commision. Many years of hard work have gone into the FE deciding to allow training, permits in the Dean and to set up the local races which are attended by national and international mushers and teams. You are also breaking a local bylaw as well as putting yourself at risk of being prosecuted if you damage FE property or injur a 3rd party by training outside of the permit area or with out a permit. Bandit running and running of race trails outside race weekends is not allowed and you will be reported to the authorities if found to be doing so. we request you purchase a permit.
Q: What equipement types can i use?
A: you may use dog scooters, bike-jor set ups, rigs and quads.
Q: When can i train?
A: you may train between the hours of 5pm and 9am any day of the week. Local mushers often get together to train and enjoy a cup of coffee afterwards.
Q: Can i use the trails if visiting the area?
A: Yes you can as a guest of a permit holder. Wednesday nights are available for Novices to 'try out' on request as long as a permit holder is present.
